Breezy and Cool

Here is an interior design concept board I recently created for a client inspired by the ocean and sandy beaches. I think blue is a hard color scheme to work with because it has the tendency to be cold if not combined with warm colors. Since the concept of this room was meant to be relaxing I knew I had to add some warmth to create a cozy space.  I did that by adding touches of dark brown and gold within the furnishings and accessories. The addition of these two colors help to neutralize the coolness of the blue and gray color palette and create warmth within the overall color scheme.

I love textures and I think they add a lot of depth and interest to a room so I always make sure to incorporate plenty of them in any space I design.  The rustic wood storage cabinet is a great earthy focal piece to the room it ties in perfectly with the end table and art frames through the material and color but since the finish is different it also adds depth.  I think you can never have enough storage; think about it, when have you ever heard someone complain about having too much storage?  It's quite often the opposite and the complaint is usually that they need more storage.  This multifunctional storage unit is beautiful and can hid a TV when not in use.

Finishes are also an important element to any room design. The glass base of the lamp and mirrors represent the translucency of the water aspect of the ocean concept.  The stripes etched on the glass represent the horizon and are repeated on the rug, louvered doors, and artwork. The color scheme and abstract beach concept on the artwork combines the overall room theme and color.

Finally, what would a space be without touches of interesting and contrasting accessories? These objects are part of the final process when decorating a room.  Think of items that will capture interest and play with shapes, colors, and sizing.  The domino boxes are an example of a playful way to add contrast to the other more sophisticated accessories throughout the room.  Plus, they have the added bonus of storage capabilities, yay... more storage!

This chair was the inspiration for the room concept.

I'm always amazed how a room color scheme develops. Once the inspiration piece is found the actual process of finding everything to go with that inspiration can be somewhat tedious at times.   Although I will say, it is very rewarding when it all comes together in the end!
