Dining Room Drama

Claudia McBain Designs
Adding drama to your dining room is easy.  Take a look at the concept board above. Choose to add all of the elements specified or just a few, the options are endless.

For a quick change with a lot of impact choose a wall that is the room's focal wall. This would be the wall you see first when you walk into the room. It can also be the wall you see behind the dining room table if you are looking at it head on. Once you have determined the focal wall, paint it a vibrant color such as the red accent on the concept board above. It's not a huge commitment to change but it will have a major impact on your room's decor.

If you choose to add color, remember to always add touches of the same color throughout the space.  You want to try to pull your room together and you do this by repetition.  My rule is: repeat color 3 times throughout a space.  You can accomplish this by incorporating pillows, accessories, objects with the same color and stage them evenly throughout the room.

Other dramatic elements that are very effective for adding drama are finishes. Pay attention to details like texture, shine, and shape.  All of these details determine how the finishes appear and how they work together.  I've chose to use touches of silver and grey as my finishes in the concept board.  I love the texture, color, and shine of the capiz chandelier and it works great with the other room's accent elements.  Think of the finishes as the jewelry of the room. Add them for sparkle and interest but they should never outshine the rest of the design.

Finally, adding a unique conversational piece is great especially in a dining room where everyone gathers.  The zebra red rug is that piece in this concept.  Not only is it unique but it also coordinates with the room color.

Great interior design is accomplished by adding dimensions of interesting elements to a space.  The best way to start is by finding an inspirational object that you love and start creating your room design around that piece.  Slowly but surely the other coordinating elements will begin to fall into place and you will end up with a space you love because it is filled with all of your favorite things!
